Always a reflection of her world of fashion, “Cissy” No. 2017 from 1956 is a treasure of midcentury fashion design. First, and foremost, it's a representation of a new phenomenon in American fashion which is the idea of a cocktail dress. The company catalog describes this as a "cocktail dress for “Cissy." This idea of creating a style for the cocktail experience was part of the view that every activity had its ensemble and appropriate hat.
There are several other interesting details represented with “Cissy” No. 2017. She is wearing a drop-waist dress which became a popular fashion component. One of its features is that it gives a long line to the torso - with a taller, leaner allusion. It also was an excellent addition for “Cissy” in practicality. The drop-waist provides the intersection of slip, undies and stand some wiggle room, and not end up bunched up like the regular waisted dresses can become to the critical eye.
“Cissy” No. 2017 also has an extra touch of the "sound" of fashion. The rustle of taffeta dresses and crinoline slips was an authentic effect of midcentury fashion. It was something calculated in upscale fashion because it denoted quality. These elements complemented its wearer with movement into or across a room. Watching movies from this era, you often get the captivating rustle of fabrics and crinoline captured by the sound department.
“Cissy” also gets the new cocktail style hat that is all the rage in millenary to complete her look. Unlike a wide brim hat that could protect the face, this acts more as a design flourish. It does elongate her silhouette and creates a touch of glamour. Sometimes referred to as a bandeau, “Cissy” wears it with great style, and the flowers and veiling add a finishing touch that frames her face and compliments her dress.
